Sunday 16th June, 2013

Today is an extra special day in our family calendar, not just because it's both Ed's birthday and his first (UK) Father's Day, but because for once we are together on a special occasion! Being a professional cricketer means that you miss out on any and every event that clashes with a cricket commitment - there is no exception to this rule.

In the five or so years we've been together, Ed has never been home for my birthday. The first year we were dating, he organised a special surprise birthday dinner for me with a bunch of his friends. At the last minute he got called into the NSW team and had to go interstate while I ended up going to my own birthday dinner with a bunch of people I hardly knew!

Regrettably he's missed a number of his best mates' weddings, important family occasions including birthdays and Christmases, and he's rarely in the same country as his family and friends for his own birthday. But this year Romy and I get to take him out for a special birthday and Father's Day brunch. That is, before he has to spend the rest of the day and night playing cricket...

This week the Aussie Test Team will convene for their pre-Ashes tour camp somewhere in the south of England. There are no family allowed on this leg of the trip, so Romy and I are off to stay with friends around the UK. On the 8th of July, two days before the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, we will reunite with Ed and the team in Nottingham for the start of our special journey.
