Invitation

Ed Cowan & Virginia Lette
If I had a dollar for every time someone said "SO YOU'RE A WAG?!" when they find out I'm married to a professional cricketer, I would be a very rich woman. I've become used to responding with a simple "yes". It's easier that way. Whatever professional or other background one may have had before that precise moment, in the mind of whom you've been introduced to fades into complete insignificance. Branded upon first impression, to them that's often all there is to it.

I used to try and distinguish myself by completely avoiding the "married to a cricketer" chat and offering information on my own personal and professional background. "I'm actually also a..." [sharp interruption] "so do you travel around with the team?" they question, and often more cheekily "what are the other WAGs like?". I'm bemused by people's fascination with 'the women behind the men' and the common perception that we're all a cross between Desperate Housewives and Victoria Beckham. Sometimes I think we could have a good laugh living up to this stereotype on the odd occasion, just for fun.

Generally, I can live with the fact that you think we lead exciting, eventful and glamorous lives - on rare occasions, it can be. You usually only see us once or twice a year when we are dolled up on the red carpet at the Allan Border Medal or in the stands of the MCG for the Boxing Day Test. You may or may not believe me when I tell you that on almost every other day of the last twelve months, I have lived in my polar-fleece-onesie, at home alone looking after a baby, covered in vomit, snot, chewed food and sporting hair that hasn't been washed for weeks. Glamorous indeed!

But to satisfy your curiosity, I'd love to take you with me on tour with the wives, girlfriends and families of the Australian Cricket Team during what we all feel is going to be a pretty exciting and monumental few weeks in our lives. Our partners, husbands, daddies, brothers and sons have been gearing up for this event for their entire lives - it's the pinnacle of their sporting careers. And on this exceptional occasion Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association have given us, their families, a chance to join them on tour for the Ashes 2013.

Along with a one year old, her wretched pram, bags of wipes/nappies and two busted suitcases, I'll be juggling a laptop and a camera on and off the tour bus - you can follow our craziness via the tabs at the top of this page. I can't guarantee it will be anywhere near as interesting as you may imagine, but this is my invitation to you to join me for the ride.
